Before I was a mom

Here is another one I received:

Before I was a Mom

Before I was a mom, I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom, I had never been puked on. Pooped on. Chewed on. Peed on. I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts. I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom, I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests. Or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom, I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put him down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom, I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small, or even so big could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mom, I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom .

Jacob the "come back" kid

Alright, I've about had it with Jacob's come backs. I mean, it is hard for me to not laugh or smile, yet at the same time I need to nip them in the behind before it gets out of control. It's just so funny because he has such a goofy personality.

His new thing now is when he does something and we didn't see him do it, we ask him and his response - with his look like he is trying to be serious, but his eyes are blinking-, "I don't know". Seriously.

Yesterday Nolan came crying to me mumbling something in his 2 year old gibberish, but I could understand Jacob and he was pointing to his head. I went to ask Jacob what happened and what he did to Nolan and he looked me right in the eyes and said, "I don't know".
I asked him again and he said, "I don't know".
I looked at him very seriously and said, "Jacob, you know what happened, now tell me."
I think I caught him by surprise and he said, "I hit Nolan on the head."

Gotta love that.

Being a Mother is the best job yet....

With Mother's day coming up I thought I would post a few of the emails on Mother's day I have recieved. I get into these corny things. I will write more about being a mom on Sunday.

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140.00 for a middle income family. Talk about price shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition!
But $160,140.00 isn't so bad if you break it down.
It translates into:
* $8,896.66 a year,
* $741.38 a month
* $171.08 a week
*A mere $24.24 a day!*
Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is: don't have children if you want to be rich.

Actually, it is just the opposite. What do you get for your $160,140.00?
* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles and flying kites.
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140.00, you never have to grow up. You get to:
* finger-paint,
* carve pumpkins,
* play hide-and-seek,
* catch lightning bugs,
* never stop believing in Santa Claus.
* play catch and swing

You have an excuse to:
* keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
* watch Saturday morning cartoons,
* go to Disney movies, and
* wish on stars.

You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodlewreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay for Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For a mere $24.24 a day, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:
* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
* taking the training wheels off a bike,
* removing a splinter,
* filling a wading pool,
* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs,
* coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat in history to witness the:
* First step,
* First word,
* First bra,
* First date,
* First time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal.
You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.
In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God.
You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost.
That is quite a deal for the price! And plus.....who's counting?

Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren & great-grandchildren! It's the best investment you'll ever make!

One Word Wednesday - What goes on when mom and dad aren't looking.

JUMP.

Miscellaneous

Jacob's new obsession is making a train out of all of our "stuff" in the garage. Always reading.

Last night mom and dad came over to watch the boys while I went to softball. Dad is going to kill me for writing this and I'm sure some people will think I'm a bad mom, but it's a story I will want to remember and I just keep picturing Jacob's reaction. Jacob and Nolan usually ask for some juice to take with them to bed. They call it juice, but we always put water in their cup (except for grandpa who many times gives them what they want....and I wouldn't want it any other way I just like to give him a hard time for it). Jacob asked for juice last night and so grandpa pulled out a picture of "juice looking" stuff and poured it into his cup. Jacob took one sip of it and gave a sour face saying, "I no like this juice". Thank goodness he didn't like it because it was a margarita mix that we had left over from our get together Saturday night. Oops.

Jacob's new thing (and I want to try to get it on tape) is sassing back to us when we ask him to do something by looking at us and saying, "I got that". It's a phrase he now says that has multiple meanings such as - I'm going, I know, I'm getting it, I'm doing it.....anything that would normally reply to us asking him to do something. For example, tonight I asked him about 3 times to get off of his bike, put it away, and get inside. His reply..... "I got that!" He says it with way too much attitude too.
Again, not to be out done by his older brother, now Nolan is saying the same thing.

Yeah! Daddy is coming home from New Orleans. We can't wait. Can you find the 13 hearts on Connor's sign?The ONLY good thing about daddy being gone so much is I get lots of company in bed. I don't sleep well because they are such tossers and turners, but I love it! Night number one was Jacob.
Night number two - Jacob and Nolan.
Night number three was Connor.Night number four is up for grabs yet.

Bittersweet

It is bittersweet. Yesterday Justin from my team at school got his letter of transfer that he has been anxiously waiting for. He tried for a transfer last year and did not get it. I have asked many times why he wants to leave us and if it was something we did or didn't do! ;) He guarantees that it's not us, but I'm not sure how much I believe him! ;) He got transfered to a lower grade and will be self-contained. He has wanted this for awhile now. He will be greatly missed as a wonderful teacher and energetic and creative colleague, EXTREMELY helpful teammate, and great friend. Though the friend part will hopefully stay the same, unless he'll be too good for us once he gets to his new school. I am very sad for us, but extremely happy for him.
Change is good right?! Good things are to come for everyone, Justin on his new adventure at Wilson school and our new team here at Willow ( I have to keep trying to convince myself).

Perfection

First off,
Happy 25th Birthday Nate!
I am so happy for you and the things going on in your life right now. You are an incredible person. Thanks for being a great brother and wonderful uncle.

After a yummy breakfast we came home today and all took a nap. It was nice. Very nice.
We headed outside to play and do some work with the garden and flowers. Boy, do I have some terrific little helpers.
Working so hard doing this....

Definitely called for some of this.....

and this.....
We came home to find this and watched it for awhile in the front yard.(you can barely see it, but Nolan's pointing to it up in the right top corner).

What a perfect day.

What a day

The first annual From the Heart 1/2 Maraton/5K Walk/Run was this morning. It's something the community has been waiting for and preparing for. The Hilstad family (Lisa's long fought battle with cancer ended earlier in April) was the focus of this year's race and whether you knew her or her family or not, it was incredible to be a part of it. I heard there was 600+ people running and walking. Every year From the Heart is going to focus and choose a family to donate to and I can only imagine how big this event will and can get. Mom, Kristin, Kelsey, and I walked the 5K along with many others. It's hard to explain the feelings but everything was perfect, the beautiful morning, the incredible community support, and the inspiring event. We're talking about running it next year. Who's in?
I stole this picture of the runners from my friend Lee Anne. I thought it was such a great picture.

Hillary's mom was there this morning and asked me if Connor told me what happened in school this week. I told her I don't think so because nothing stuck out in my mind. She told me that Hillary came home Thursday after school and said, "Mom, I guess Connor is my boyfriend" (if you remember a previous post, Hillary's sister always teases her about Connor being her boyfriend). Hillary's mom asked her why, and Hillary told her that Connor kissed her on the cheek and then she kissed him on the cheek back. I waited for Hillary's mom's reaction and thankful she laughed. That could be a touchy subject, but hopefully that's as far as it goes! ;) I think it's actually cute, Matt thinks his son is a stud. I asked Connor about it that night and he got all embarrassed. He still says that she's "JUST" one of his best friends, but he really likes her.

Jacob's newest thing is asking a million questions.
"What you doing?"
"Where you going?"
"Where we going?"
"What you say?"
"What that?"
So of course Nolan can't be outdone and now constantly asks, "What that?"

Everyone came over to our house Saturday night to celebrate Nate and Matt's birthdays. We had a great meal, played some mario cart, had a fire and s'mores, and enjoyed the night.

Twins game

Friday night Matt and I went to the Twins game and it just so happened that Diane, Nate's girlfriend (who we got to meet and who is wonderful), bought tickets to the game for Nate's birthday. We got a bite to eat with them at Hubert's before the game.
The last year in the dome. I'm looking forward to going to a few more games that we have tickets for.
What a great game! It was Mauer's first game back and his first at bat homer was sweet. The crowd went wild. This is the pitch that he hit the home run from - no lie.
Matt joked that it's hard to say what the best part of the game was, Mauer's home run or Nate and Diane getting on the Kissing Kam. We couldn't believe they were on there, we've never known anyone that has gotten on the big screen before! They're famous.

Here are some of my other Twins' crushes (shhh....don't tell Matt).
Span. Like this new guy maybe it's because Matt likes him.
I don't know why, but I have always had a little crush on Punto, even when he wasn't playing very well or very much. Morneau is so fun to watch at bat.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE this guy. I don't know why, but always have. It might be because he reminds me of Matt with being tall and skinny, and good looking (not to mention one of the best closers). ;)
